As an open-format DJ, one of the most common challenges is shifting the energy from mid-tempo Hip-Hop up to high-energy House or EDM.
Technique 1: The Transition Edit
The easiest and most effective way is using a Transition Edit. These are special tracks produced specifically for DJs that start at one BPM (e.g., 100 BPM) and gradually speed up to another (e.g., 128 BPM) during a build-up. You can download hundreds of these on RPOOL.ID.
Technique 2: Wordplay / Vocal Echo Out
Find a Hip-Hop track that ends with a strong vocal phrase. Apply a heavy echo/delay effect, cut the volume fader, and drop the EDM track on the "one" beat.
Technique 3: Half-Time Mixing
130 BPM is mathematically similar to 65 BPM. You can mix a fast EDM track over a slow Trap or Hip-Hop track (around 65-70 BPM) by beatmatching them in half-time.
