What is a Redrum? A Guide to DJ Edits

You see the word "Redrum" on record pools all the time. Find out what it means and why it makes old songs hit harder.

When browsing RPOOL.ID, you'll frequently encounter tracks labeled "Redrum" (Redrum = Drum, reversed). But what does it actually mean?

Beefing Up the Beat

A Redrum is a specific type of DJ edit where a producer takes an original song (usually an older 80s/90s track or an acoustic song) and layers a heavy, modern drum beat underneath it.

Why DJs Use Them

Many classic 80s songs were recorded with live drummers, meaning the BPM fluctuates slightly, making them impossible to beatmatch. A Redrum fixes the track to a strict grid (quantizes it) and adds a heavy kick drum, making an old classic hit just as hard on a club system as a modern EDM track.
